A powerful and important motion to add to everyone's Robert's Rules of Order toolbox is "point of order". Many times board members will use Robert’s Rules of Order as a weapon. Some people use Robert's to intimidate, manipulate and to control meetings, and “point of order” is often the weapon of choice.
Let’s remember that Robert’s Rules of Order was created to keep order in meetings and to support boards in getting more work done. If you have seen someone (or if you are that someone) who has used “point of order” as a weapon then you need to watch this video!
Board meetings are often ineffective because people are misusing Robert’s Rules of Order. A “point of order” on a healthy board is used to support the chair in running a great meeting. In a poorly run meeting people use “point of order” to embarrass, call out, or manipulate the meeting.
In this video Susan Leahy MA, professional speaker and the creator of Robert’s Rules Made Simple, talks with Professional Registered Parliamentarian (PRP) Lorenzo Cuesta about how to use a “point of order” properly.
